Census 1901

The population had leapt to 643 of whom 65% were born in Hampshire. What accounts for this sudden increase? Was this caused by boundary changes/inmigration or natural increase or a combination of all three? There were eight farms but little is stated about each and cross reference to local trade directories is needed for more detail.

The economy had diversified with 59 now employed on the railway, many of whom lived in navvy huts by the railway suggesting temporary employment and research is needed to establish why. There was also a brickworks in the parish.

The rector was born in Devon Charles H C Baker from St Edmund’s Hall Oxford. Why had this changed?
