Census 1881

The population was 359 including the detached portion of Holt of whom 334 were born in Hampshire.
Agriculture still dominated with 54 agricultural labourers and seven farms for which acreages and numbers of employees are stated.
The Holt section reflects modernization of shipping with a retired steamship owner and his son, employed as a ship agent, who were both born in Scotland but were resident in Newnham in the census year.
The rector, Revd Andrew Wallace Milroy, was born in Scotland and was also preacher at the Rolls in London.
