The population was 367 of whom 354 were born in Hampshire.
Farming dominated the economy with six farms of over 100 acres and three smaller ones. There were six millers working at the two mills, Lyde and Hook.
The railway was beginning to have an impact on employment in the parish with 10 employed as railway labourers and one as a platelayer.
There were 27 domestic servants, reflecting the social status of some of the householders.
The rector was born in Cumberland and a fellow of Queen’s college, Oxford, the patrons of the living. He had been joined by an Independent minister.
