Enumerator William Clark

Ellisfield and Bradley

The whole of the parish of Ellisfield including Ellisfield Common, Northgate Farm and Ellisfield village and the whole of the parish of Bradley lying compact together with Burmonds Pitt (now Berdmondspit) cottages.

Unfortunately the enumerator for this census has given very few addresses. The population has dropped since the last census to 251 including two people spending census night in a tent. Four farmers are listed but only the name of College Farm is given. The main occupation is agricultural labour with 48 men listed. An additional 19 are working as bailiff, shepherd, carter, horse and cowmen. A further eight men are working with wood as cutters, carpenters, hurdle makers and hoop shavers. There are three blacksmiths, two bakers, tailor, a cordwainer and one beer seller. Only eight women are listed as employed, all in domestic situations.
