Steventon Probate Material, 1500-1700

Wills and inventories survive for Steventon in Hampshire Record Office (HRO) and The National Archives (TNA). The transcriptions below have been made from copies of original probate documents supplied by HRO and TNA.  Words have been modernized and punctuation added to make reading easier but names have been transcribed as written. Words in italics indicate omissions in the original document which have been added to make sense of the text. Words in square brackets indicate that they have been transcribed as seen but where the meaning is unclear. Steventon is described as being in the county of Southampton, the old name for Hampshire.

Comparatively few records exist for Steventon but those surviving indicate that Steventon was a mixed farming area with mainly arable and sheep. A few cattle were reared on the lower land in the north of the parish. Landholders included the lord of the manor, the rector, one large freeholder with 60 a. and the copyholders whose tenancy was recorded on the manorial rolls of the lord of the manor. The lord of the manor frequently leased the manor farm to a sub-tenant.
