1871 Census

The census for this period is split into Districts 10 and 11.  On the attached spreadsheet District 10 is identified as 1871A and District 11 as 1871B. The Union Workhouse has been omitted and will be the subject of a separate discussion.  Unfortunately the enumerator has failed to note any addresses, but to aid identification of houses his descriptions are given below.

District 10 is described as the part of the parish of Basing which is north of The Street commencing at the West End of the parish at the Cottage near the Union taking the Cottage near the South Western Railway, Lickpit Farm, Four Lanes Farm, Cuffle Farm and cottages near the Toll House in the Reading Road, Razors and Scourcers Farms and the houses at Pyotts Hill.

District 11 is that part of the parish of Basing which is south of The Street including Basing Mill, Basing Lodge, Blacklands Farm, the Decoy, Hale, Dean Lands and Poors Farm and Moorhams and that of Water End in Basing including the Dwelling house a small part thereof being in the parish of Nately Scures the Toll House near, thence to the Blacksmith’s Shop and Cottage near Tunworth Down thence to Hackwood Park Farm and the houses near thereto and the Lodge and Gardens.

The population figure remained steady at just over a thousand people.  There was a marked increase in the number of workers on the railway - the total had more than doubled in 20 years.  The effects of the 1870 Education Act are very evident in the large number of children in school.  For the first time the census return shows an identifiable construction industry.
