1861 Census

The census for this period is split into Districts 9 and 10. On the attached spreadsheet District 9 is identified as 1861A and District 10 as 1861B. Unfortunately the enumerator has failed to note many addresses.
District 9 is the part of the parish North of The Street commencing at the west end of the parish including the Union Workhouse and cottages near the Railway Station (South Western), Lickpit Farm, Four Lanes, Cuffell Farm and cottages near the Toll House on the Reading Road, Razors and Scoucers Farms all the houses at Pyards Hill. This is identified on the attached spreadsheet as 1861A. The Union Workhouse has been omitted and will be the subject of a separate discussion.
District 10 is part of the parish south of The Street including Basing Mill, Mr Vines, Basing Lodge, Blacklands Farm, the Decoy, Hale, Dean Lands and Poors Farm, Moornham and that part of Waterend in the parish of Basing including the dwelling house, a small part thereof being in the parish of Nately Scures, the Toll house near, thence to the Blacksmith’s shop and cottages near Tunworth Down thence to Hackwood Park farm and the houses next thereto and the Lodges and Gardens in the same.
Although the main occupations in Basing parish remained agricultural there was a 20% drop in the number of workers on the land. On the other hand, there was an increase in the number of small traders by almost one third. There were also more millers recorded at this time than in any other period in the second half of the nineteenth century. Interestingly, only one person is described in the census as a pauper.
