1891 census

Population had fallen to 378 with four unoccupied houses. The retired admiral was still living at Upton Grey House, aged 89 with nine servants to assist him. Employment had diversified slightly. Helen Sparshatt was described as an organist. Charles William Jones, a lodger with the Strong family, was an insurance agent. Thomas Knight, a lodger with the Bristow family, was a police constable. There were two gamekeepers who presumably aided the sport of the wealthy in the parish.
