Yankee Jack

 John Short as a young sailor in the 1860s was involved in breaking the blockades in the American Civil War. That earned him his famous nickname. He was a shantyman on sailing ships and continued to sing into old age when he was introduced to Cecil Sharp and Richard Terry, collectors of folk songs. He seems to have been happy to sing whenever he was asked although he was very modest about his extraordinary voice.
