1851 Census

In 1851, Basing, a large parish of 5300 acres, 2 miles east of Basingstoke was predominately dependent on agriculture. Most of the land belonged to Lord Bolton, whose residence, Hackwood House, lay just outside the parish boundary; a smaller percentage in the north of the parish was owned by the Chute family at the Vyne. Almost 60% of the working population were involved on the land. The remainder of those in work were occupied in domestic service and a wide variety of basic trades and skilled crafts.
