Will and inventory of Walter Bernard, 1606

Bernard belonged to a long-standing Basingstoke family (millers 1546) and had a high tax assessment in 1586. He leased a mill and a house worth £50. He was to be buried by his mother in the Liten of the Holy Ghost and left 5s to the church and 2 bushels of wheat to be baked for the poor.

His inventory (value £300) revealed his profits from arable and pastoral farming with crops in the fields valued at £120, 180 sheep valued at £45 and cattle at £22.
