The houses have rear extensions containing a well-lit shoemaker’s workshop over a scullery. They were accessed either by ladder and trapdoor from the scullery or by an outer stair or ladder. Even when all the shoemaking processes moved into the factory in the later 19th century many workers preferred to work at home.
