The Lions, West Quay, Bridgwater

Sir Benjamin Holloway was the architect probably employed by the duke of Chandos to carry out his building schemes. Holloway himself built Bridgwater’s finest house, The Lions on West Quay. It has a grand entrance with steps up from a small courtyard flanked by pavilion wings. It is a testament to the skills of local bricklayers. Bridgwater had been producing clamp-made bricks since the late 17th century and the variation in colour that method produces was exploited by the men who built this house.
