Castle Street, Bridgwater, south side

Castle Street was the finest achievement of the duke of Chandos’s scheme built c.1724. The main part of the street contains two rows of six 5-bayed, 3-storeyed houses. Each house was however built separately. Note the straight joints between each. There are also subtle differences between each such as varied door surrounds. The street was probably completed well before 1734 when the duke sold his Bridgwater estate. The house on the right houses Bridgwater’s art centre, the oldest in England.
