King Square, Bridgwater

King Square was laid out on the site of the Castle in the late 18th century. It attempted to continue the duke of Chandos's development westwards from Castle and Chandos Street creating a central square with streets leading out of it. Only the east and south sides were completed. The south side is still a mix of buildings including a fine 17th-century house and the north side contains two houses from the original scheme, the 1912 freemasons' hall and a modern terrace in Georgian style.

The central garden square contains the town's 1924 war memorial topped by a statue of Europe by John Angel with children representing Strife, Bloodshed, Corruption and Despair under her feet.
