Former Globe inn, Nether Stowey

The Globe inn, well known to Coleridge, closed c.1850 and the business moved to this house in Castle Street until it closed c.1964. The house is clearly earlier as is shown by the old timber window on the ground floor and the heightened front wall required to replace the thatched roof, possibly with dormer windows, with tiles.
The old Globe, largely rebuilt as a private house, stood near the market place. James Walsh stayed there in August 1797 when he was investigating rumours that Wordsworth and Coleridge were French spies!
