Castle Street, Nether Stowey

Despite the cars, double yellow lines, tarmac and modern signs there is much about this street that would have been familiar to Coleridge. Many of his walks would have taken him up this road, although he did have a preference for crossing gardens and paddocks to get to his destination!
The glimpse of Castle Hill in the background is unchanged and the Stowey stream still rushes down the road although now neatly penned. Many of the houses lining the street date from the 16th to 18th centuries although their steep roofs are now tiled rather than thatched and sashes have replaced casements.
For more about Nether Stowey see the account of its history in the Victoria County History of Somerset volume 5.
