House and shop in High Street on site of former George inn

The George recorded in 1665 may be that of 1463. The landlord paid as much for the right to have a sign in the street as his burgage rent until it was taken down c. 1799. The George was a large house east of High Street, described as ancient and decayed in 1789. Despite repairs c. 1800 it was in a bad state in 1815. Elizabeth Wood, innkeeper went bankrupt in 1859. It closed shortly after 1871 and was partly demolished in 1873 and altered probably to form the house and shop in the centre of the picture painted white with a gabled porch.
