An 18th-century Minehead shopkeeper

Catherine Wells, grocer and draper of Minehead in the later 18th century obviously kept the best store in town patronised by the local clergy, farmers, the Luttrells and ladies as far away as Bristol and Swansea, but humbler folk used the shop such as the local carpenter who bought a comb for 8d in 1776 and sea captains and publicans were her best customers
