Compton House and Park in 1767

An estate map produced in 1767, with north to the left, which shows Compton House and Compton Park beforeĀ  both were greatly altered in the later 18th century. Note the square ponds and water features, all of which were submerged in Capability Brown's new lake; note also the formal gardens next to the house.

At the top of the picture, the old village street runs through the park from north to south, with several cottages lying along it. All of these were removed as a result of the landscaping.
