The Basingstoke Massagainian Riots

Henry Smith's music shop November 1881

The riots against the Salvation Army in Basingstoke in the early 1880s gave rise to questions in the House of Commons, led to the publication of a parliamentary paper, Basingstoke Disturbances, and made headlines in the national press. One London newspaper described Basingstoke as a town “that appears to be inhabited chiefly by a race of barbarians”.
