Bishop's Palace, Wells, curtain wall and towers

After digging the moat the excavated earth formed a rampart on which a curtain wall was built, probably in the 1340s. Bastions were inserted at intervals. Apart from a short section incorporated in the Bishop's House, the wall is complete and on the south and west there are rampart walks giving views of the city and the surrounding countryside.
