New Silk Mills railway bridge, Taunton

The Silk Mill road was largely rebuilt in the 1970s as a link road to serve the west side of Taunton but there were complaints about the long hold-ups at the level crossing with the busy London--Penzance line. On 2 April 2005 the new railway bridge was lifted into place alongside by the largest crane in Britain. The new road, wider and further west, actually uses the site of the former silk mill, which has been completely obliterated. However a sentry post from the Second World War supply depot was preserved east of the bridge.

The old road in the foreground crossed the railway by a level crossing removed after the bridge opened.
