Castle Cary Horsepond war memorial

The Horse Pond, originally regarded as part of the highway and maintained by the parish between the 17th and 19th centuries, probably accounted for the width of the adjacent street known as the Triangle. A walkway, probably built in 1784, divided pond from road in 1839 but an overspill flowed across the street and water from the pond flowed down the side of Fore Street until the 1950s. In 1897 a pump or fountain was erected beside the pond to commemorate the jubilee. By 1910 the Hoskins family claimed ownership of the pond and in 1920 sold it to the parish council for a war memorial.
