Castle Cary Post Office

Only the red sign indicates that this elegant house in Bailey Hill is the Post Office. The house was built in 1767 of Cary stone with Ashlar dressings behind a small walled forecourt. For most of the 19th century it was a doctors' surgery but in 1882 it was converted into a post office. The proprietor was also an estate agent, auctioneer, bailiff and the 1891 census enumerator. His daughter was a telegraphist and there were two resident clerks. It has remained the post office ever since.
