Castle Cary Ochiltree House

Ochiltree House, formerly the home of John Boyd and later of the Macmillan family, dates from the early 19th century and was described as newly-erected in 1825 but was heavily restored in the 1990s after being used as offices.

William Macmillan (d. 1911), managing director of Boyd’s and founder of the Castle Cary Visitor, was a noted occupant of the house. His death from cancer led his son Douglas to found the Society for the Prevention and Relief of Cancer in 1912, more commonly known as Macmillan Cancer Support, commemorated in the plaque by the front door and by a long-distance footpath in the county.
