Barrington Court Strode building

The Strode building bears the date 1674 and initials WS and has always been regarded as a 17th-century stable block but its appearance and its close proximity to the house seem to point to an 18th-century date. It was converted into a house for the Lyle family by Edward Forbes who put windows in the west side overlooking the new formal gardens, which he designed after consulting Gertrude Jekyll. Genuine and replica late 17th-century woodwork was installed in rooms which were named Wren, Early Wren or William and Mary. The courtyard was converted into an Italianate paved garden with fountain. The building now houses the shop and restaurant .
