Raja Rammohan Roy

Raja Rammohan Roy can be said to be 'the father of modern India'. Roy came to England in 1831 as the ambassador of the Mughal Emperor Akbar Shah II. He stayed at Beech House, Stapleton Grove, Bristol in 1833. Ten days later, on 27th September, he died from meningitis. Initially buried at Beech House, after ten years he was reinterred at Arno's Vale. The article by Roy expert Dr. Rohit Barot on 'Indian Settlement in Bristol before and after the Second World War' includes a biographical sketch of Roy.
