Peveril or Peak Castle, Castleton, Derbyshire

William Peverel not only began a castle at Bolsover but also fortified a site high above the present village of Castleton. The keep of Peveril Castle was not built until 1176 by king Henry II, to whom the Peverels' Derbyshire estates had passed in 1152. The smooth stone (ashlar) which faced keep survives only at the top of walls round the parapet.
