Codford Houses and Farms

Codford has a number of ancient farms. Until the 20th century most of the inhabitants of Codford village were working farmers and most of the buildings were farmhouses, a number of which survive, spread out along the High Street.
Cattle and sheep farming were the main forms of agriculture in Codford until the 20th century. The valley in which Codford lies has chalky soil – more suitable for rearing cattle than growing crops. However in the 20th century artificial fertilisers were used to improve the soil, which increased the amount of arable (crop) farming.
