The Sculptured Stone (Codford Cross)

Discovered built into the wall above the chancel arch of St Peter’s church in 1864, this Anglo-Saxon sculpture now stands against the north chancel wall. A single, tapering block of Bath stone from the Chalfield area (north Wiltshire), 5m high and split lengthwise, it was probably carved on all its faces; one broad face was lost when the stone was split. The carving is deep-cut and the detail well preserved. View photographs and documents associated with The Sculptured Stone (Codford Cross) from the selection on the right.
