Sheep Street (south): No. 17

The facade of No. 17 is early-to-mid 19th-century, similar to that of No. 23 to its left. The sash windows are contemporary, since they lack the 'horns' which characterise later sashes (after larger, heavier glass panes became available).

Nineteenth-century occupants included a sawyer and his family, a retired excise officer, the solicitor Walter Ansell (1860s), and the master of the boys' Board school (1880s). The name Lenthall House dates from the 1950s. The passage on the left, typical of many Burford houses, led to Nos. 13 and 15 Sheep Street, which have since been demolished.
