Witney Street (south): No. 34 (former Great House stables)

Until 1968–9 this was stabling for The Great House. In origin it was probably contemporary with the main building, but may have been largely rebuilt in the mid 19th century. The 20th-century conversion, by the architect Russell Cox, included insertion of new windows and chimneys and building of a new lower block on the west; a bullseye window in the east gable is modelled on those in the Great House.
A former barn on the east side of the rear yard was restored by the owners c.1987, when dormers were inserted. An adjoining barn belonged to the neighbouring Baptist chapel, and was for a time used as a chapel school. Its Stonesfield slate roof was replaced with imitation slates in the 1990s.
