High Street (west): Nos 74-76

A 17th-century front (now rendered) hides another building of medieval origin. Nothing is known before the 1840s, however, when the range was occupied by William Hemming, a smith and (later) 'engineer, ironmonger, and plumber'. From the 1880s the firm was taken over by Charles East and his relatives the Hollises, ironmongers, engineers, and waterworks contractors. A long range of outbuildings at the rear is entirely 19th-century, as are the first-floor sash windows at the front. The building was gutted for conversion into a supermarket c.1970, when two separate ground-floor shops were thrown into one; it continued as Budgens supermarket in 2007.
