Ledbury Carriers

The whole urban hierarchy was knit together by its carriers. In 1637 John Taylor in his Carriers’ Cosmography wrote: ‘what a man sends to Hereford may thence be passed to St. David’s in Wales [while] Worcester carriers can convey anything as farre as Carmarthen.’ Ledbury, lying on a through route, was served by a number of regional and national carriers in the later 18th,19th and early 20th centuries. These were supplemented by a number of local carriers who worked routes around the villages of eastern Herefordshire, linking market towns with the county town.
