Shipbuilding in Sunderland

The later 17th century records of goods imported and exported in Sunderland show existing industries expanding and new ones developing. The extraordinary growth of the coal exporting trade stimulated much of this. Shipbuilding with its associated trades was one such trade which was closely linked with and directly supplied the coal trade.
