The Black Death in the Wearmouth Townships

The Black Death which first arrived in England in 1348, had reached Durham by the summer of 1349. Reputedly entering the Bishopric via the old salters' road which ran from Billingham to Sunderland, the plague had a severe impact, causing long-term economic recession and significant population across the region.
