Bishopwearmouth Rectory

The parish church of St Michael and All Angels in Bishopwearmouth belonged to the bishop of Durham, who appointed its rectors. The rectory of Bishopwearmouth was extremely wealthy and its incumbents were appointed from amongst prominent clergymen. One of its most distinguished rectors was Tobie Matthew who resigned in 1595 upon his consecration as bishop of Durham.
