Streets of Bishopwearmouth

There were two significant developments of new streets on the fringes of Bishopwearmouth village in the 18th century. First was the Robinson estate, north of High Street West, of which little but street names remains. Second was a rather grander collection of houses and chapels south of High Street, close to the border with Sunderland parish, from the 1790s. There are still traces of some of the fine properties of Villiers Street.
