Sunderland cottages

Sunderland cottages are a distinctive local feature. They are found around the city centre, in the areas where industry - coal-mining, ship-building, lime-burning - thrived during the mid to late 19th century. Hendon has street upon street of these one-and-a-half-storey dwellings. Some of the terraces have at their end a larger cottage or a shop.

We are currently completing a detailed commissioned survey of Sunderland cottages. This is a trail-blazing piece of architectural history, exploring who built the cottages, which industries they were associated with, and the various styles of design. The results of this research will be used in our Townscape paperback and will be shared with Sunderland City Council conservation officers, with whom we intend producing an accessible guide to the cottages.
