The lands of Darley abbey

Darley abbey was a house of Augustinian canons established in the early 12th century on the banks of the river Derwent a few miles north of Derby. It was the largest and wealthiest of the small number of abbeys in medieval Derbyshire and accumulated land in several different parts of the county, including Bolsover and the adjoining village of Palterton. At Bolsover the canons were also given the parish church in the mid 12th century, probably not long after it was been built.
