Perranzabuloe Parish St Piran in the Sands

The medieval church of St Piran, on Perran Sands, was built in about 1150, following the inundation of St Piran's Oratory by the dunes. It was enlarged in the fifteenth century, but was itself abandoned in 1804 due to encroachment of sand, though it was still visible in 1805. The tower, pillars, font, woodwork and tracery were removed to a new site 3km inland at Perranzabuloe. The complete foundations remain, and the walls at the east stand up to 2m high, to the window openings. The remains of the church lie within an enclosure which includes a cemetery and associated medieval cross of the 9th century.
