From Hawkridge to Queensland

Monument in Hawkridge church to a man who emigrated to Queensland, Australia

Some time after the death of his wife John Land moved to Australia where he died.

The later 19th century was the era of emigration from Exmoor. Hawkridge people had not moved more than a few miles in  the census of 1851 but by 1891 of 93 people in England born in the parish 42 still lived there, 33 were in nearby parishes, and 18 were in London, Kent, and Essex.
