Ashway, Dulverton

Looking across the Barle Valley from Ashway to Row Lane, Hawkridge, on skyline and Birchcleeve wood.

Ashway farm lies beside the relatively sheltered valley of the river Barle.  A small stream fed by a spring runs south from the farm to the Barle while to either side are spurs of Varle hill. To the south lies a relatively flat stretch of valley floor beside the river and to the north the steep slopes of Ashway Side lead up to the top of Varle and Mounsey hills. Extensive woodland shelters the Barle but a gap opposite the farm allows a view toward Hawkridge and its church. An old quarry west of the farmstead supplied it with building material. At the foot of the slope stood Ashway Hat cottages.
