Wylye Valley

For centuries, the Wylye Valley was an area of sheep farming and barley production, where the sheep were used to dung the land. The barley was sent to Warminster market for use in brewing.   By the early Middle Ages, if not before, the Wylye Valley had become an important routeway. In 1761, the Fisherton trust turnpiked the Wylye valley road all the way from Salisbury, via Wilton and along Codford’s main street, to Heytesbury, where an earlier trust continued the route to Warminster.
