A typical Cornish church, St James has a west tower with buttresses, an aisle of seven bays, wagon roofs and a south porch inscribed with the year 1567 (probably built under John Grenville, who was rector 1524-1580). It has an impressive Norman doorway, with beak head and zigzag small columns and unusual shaped capitals (some in the shape of fir cones).
