Sir Henry Rider Haggard

Henry Rider Haggard was born in Norfolk in 1856, the son of a Norfolk squire. His sister married Charles Edward Maddison Green, rector of Ledbury and Master of St. Katherine's Hospital. Rider Haggard was a regular visitor to their home at the Master's House at St. Katherine's Hospital. He was invited to open the Barrett Browning Memorial Hall in 1896.

Most famous for his adventure stories, such as King Solomon's Mines, he also wrote extensively on rural matters and some of his research was conducted on his visits to Herefordshire.
