Richard Mompesson

Between 1581 and the later 18th century, the majority of the estate of Codford St Mary was owned by the Mompesson family.  The  family made clear their importance in the parish by erecting the handsome monument that is now in the south chapel of Codford St Mary Church.  This tomb probably commemorated the lord of the manor, Richard Mompesson who died in 1584, although it may not have been installed until Richard’s relative, John (rector of Codford St Mary between 1612 and 1646), repaired the chancel in 1622.
