The Poplars

The Poplars was built in the early 19th century with a fashionably Greek Doric porch. It was extended about in 1873–4 by a single-storeyed wing with its own street entrance that was originally a tailor’s shop, but in about 1889 it became a surgery for the local doctor, George Frederick Chadwick.   At this time, it was modernised and given smart rusticated facing.
