Hannah More School at No. 43 Park Street

Hannah More (1745-1833), a Bristol Quaker, established a school for young ladies on this site. More was a leading campainger for better education for the poor, and also took part in Quaker actions against the slave trade. Although women were unable to vote and in most of society had unequal rights with men many Quaker women were very active campaigners and speakers about issues which concerned them. In 1778 More joined the large scale boycott of slave grown and harvested sugar which helped tell people about the horrors of slavery.
